Majority of No. 1 Seeds Advance During Day of ITA Cup

TEMPE, Ariz. (October 17) – The majority of No. 1 seeds held serve and advanced during day one of the ITA Cup that opened Thursday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.

Top-seeds posting first-round singles victories included Columbus State’s Alvaro Regalado (DII men), Jose Dugo (Georgia Gwinnett; NAIA men), Maria Genevese (Georgia Gwinnett; NAIA women), Yassir Kilani (ASA Miami; JC men) and Tatiana Simova (ASA Miami; JC women).

Natalie Espinal (Nova Southeastern; DII women), James Hopper (Case Western Reserve; DIII men) and Katherine Fleischman (Wesleyan (CT); DIII women) all knocked off No. 1 seeds in their first-round matches.

In doubles action, six of the top eight No. 1 seeds advanced in opening-round action.

The ITA Cup continues Friday and runs through Sunday at the Rome Tennis Center.

The ITA Cup features individuals from NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and junior college competing in their respective 16-player individual singles draws and doubles team draws with the winners earning entry into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships scheduled for Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.

The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is the lone collegiate tennis event where players from all five divisions, including the top individuals from NCAA Division I, compete in the same tournament.
