RANKINGS / ALL-AMERICAN SELECTIONS
TEMPE, Ariz. – With the 2017-18 college tennis season kicking into high gear, Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the 2017 Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis Women’s Division I Preseason Rankings on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
The ITA also unveiled official selections for the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, which will be hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California, for the 34th straight year. The tournament kicks off with prequalifying matches starting on September 30, while the main draw is runs Oct. 5-8.
The first ITA national event of the 2017-18 season takes place September 15-17, 2017, as the International Tennis Hall of Fame serves as host of the second annual Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational. Four Division I men’s teams (Georgia, Illinois, Princeton and TCU) and four Division I women’s teams (Florida, LSU, North Carolina and Princeton) will take part in the one of a kind collegiate event held on the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Ena Shibahara of UCLA begins the 2017-18 season as the nation’s top-ranked singles player. Shibahara’s freshman campaign saw her advance from the pre-qualifying draw to the singles final at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, and a week later, win the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters (she’ll be defending her title in Malibu next week). Shibahara was routinely ranked in the Top 10 and was named the ITA Rookie of the Year.
In doubles, Michigan’s Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian return to the top-ranked spot; a position they held for a time during the 2017 regular season. Fahey is one of three players (Shibahara and Auburn’s Alizee Michaud) to be ranked in the Top 10 in both singles and doubles, with the Michigan junior at No. 6 in singles.
Michaela Haet of Rice is the top-ranked Freshman/Newcomer, while Georgia Tech features two players in the Top 10, with Victoria Flores at No. 7 and Ida Jarlskog at No. 8.
