BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The ITA/ USTA National Summer Championships wrapped up the second day of competition in Bloomington on Sunday.
On the men’s side No. 1 seed Sam Monette from Indiana advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2,6-1 victory over George Cartledge from Virginia Tech. Monette will play Ross Guignon, who advanced with a 6-2,6-3 win over Alex Kartsonis. The No. 2 seed, Zach McCourt continued to advance with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to reach the round of 16. Also advancing was the No. 3 seed Sam Shropshire from Northwestern with a 6-6,6-4 victory. Those round of 16 matches will be played Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the IU varsity tennis courts.
In the women’s main draw for singles No. 1 seed Francis Altick from Vanderbilt reached the round of 16 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Alexis Casati from Illinois. Altick’s teammate and No. 2 seed Sydney Campbell dropped her match in the round of 32 to Ansley Speaks from Furman, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (7).
In women’s doubles the draw started with 32 and is now down to eight teams. Of the top four seeded teams, two of them reached the quarterfinals. Katz and Westby from USC advanced with a 8-6 win over Hine and Spearman from Missouri. Altick and Sharma from Vanderbilt advanced with a 8-3 win over Emme and Zordani.
In men’s doubles the draw started with 64 teams and is also down to the quarterfinals. Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk (No. 2 seed) from Indiana advanced with a 8-2 win over Rechant and Steffens. The No. 1 seed team of Demster and Mudge from NC State advanced with a 8-3 win over McCoy and Yee from Indiana.
Singles play in the main draw will start at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow for the women and 10:00 a.m. for the men. The start of doubles is not yet determined.
