Duke senior Hanna Mar voted Most Outstanding Player

SKILLMAN, NJ (Feb. 14) - Duke's Hanna Mar, a senior who went 3-0 in the third singles spot and clinched the championship for the Blue Devils, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

Hanna Mar clinched two matches for the champion Blue Devils

Mar helped Duke win its second indoor championship, as she clinched the final point for her team against UCLA, coming back from a set down to defeat Bruin Jennifer Brady, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3. Mar, currently ranked No. 42 in the ITA Women's Singles Rankings also clinched her team's 4-2 upset of defending champion North Carolina. On the heels of their win, Duke moved up to the top spot in the ITA Division I Women's Team Rankings.

The Blue Devil's first match against Michigan's Brooke Bolender did not finish but she was able to best her next three opponents, all in match tiebreaks. In the quarterfinal against rival North Carolina, Mar came back from a set down to beat Whitney Kay 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 to clinch the 4-2 win for Duke. In the semifinals, it would again take a match tiebreak for Mar to get past Lynn Chi of Cal, which she did 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.

In the final, her comeback win against Brady, a freshman currently ranked No. 22, was an intense battle that took over 2 ½ hours. Mar got down a set after falling behind 1-4 to the hard-hitting Bruin. Brady broke at 4-4 in the second set after a marathon game to serve for the match at 5-4, but Mar fought back and broke and the set eventually went to a tiebreak, which Mar won, 7-3, to force a match tiebreak. The Blue Devil jumped to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, building her lead to 9-2 and winning the match on her second match point for a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3 victory and the final point Duke needed to win the title.
