Stanford, Virginia Hold Top ITA College Tennis Rankings 

Thirteen schools represented in both men's and women's Top 25

SKILLMAN, NJ (Jan. 29) - The sixth annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend came to a close earlier this week, propelling 15 men's and 15 women's teams that successfully won both of their matches to the 2014 ITA Division I National Men's and Women's Team Indoor Championships. With only a handful of ranked teams upset during ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the majority of the top teams in the ITA College Tennis Rankings remained unchanged as the Virginia men and Stanford women remained as the No. 1 teams in nation for the third time in a row.

 

Follow the Leader: For the men, Virginia is followed by (in order): UCLA, Georgia, USC, Ohio State, Tennessee, Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. On the women's side, Stanford is followed by Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, UCLA, USC, Texas A&M, Cal, Miami (FL) and Duke.

 

Conference Count: Men's Top 25: SEC - 10; ACC - 4; Big 12 and Pac-12 - 3; Big Ten - 2; AAC, WCC and Ivy League - 1. All six of the Big 12 and Pac-12 schools represented are ranked in the Top 15 this week. Women's Top 25: ACC - 7; SEC - 6; Pac 12 - 5; Big 12 - 4; Big Ten - 2, and Conference USA - 1. Four of the five Pac-12 teams ranked in the top 25 are inside the top 10 this week, while both the SEC and ACC have three teams each in the top 10.

 

Double-Dip: This week, 13 schools have both their men's and women's programs ranked inside the Top 25.

Top 25 Caliber: Two men's teams broke into the Top 25 this week. Harvard came within a few games of knocking off No. 10 Mississippi State, pushing the Crimson from a tie for 26th to a tie for 24th in the ITA Division I Men's Team Rankings. Notre Dame advanced to the ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championships with an upset win over Kentucky, vaulting them seven spots up to No. 22. On the women's side, Arizona State moved up two spots from No. 26 to No. 24 on the heels of its 4-0 upset of then No. 21 Notre Dame, while TCU moved up from No. 30 to No. 25.

 

Top 75 Newcomers: Five teams entered the ITA College Tennis Rankings this week. Three men's teams accomplished the feat, led by No. 64 Dartmouth, who knocked off then No. 58 Arkansas in a match where eight tiebreakers and four third sets were played. Santa Clara knocked off then No. 64 Georgia State to earn its No. 71 ranking and Utah topped then No. 67 New Mexico to jump to No. 72 in the ITA Division I Men's Team Rankings. Both Utah and Santa Clara were ranked to start the season. 

 

On the women's side, Northwestern State entered the rankings at No. 67, after upsetting then No. 52 SMU in 2014 ITA Kick-Off Weekend action. DePaul (No. 74) and Mississippi State (No. 75) both made debuts in the 2013-2014 ITA Team Rankings after both defeated then No. 68 San Jose State last weekend during ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

 

On the Way to UVA: The 2014 ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, VA is schedule for February 7-10. Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, UCLA, USC, Texas A&M, Cal, Miami (FL), Duke, Michigan, Alabama, Clemson, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Texas make-up the field of 16 teams.
