Eighth annual Master'U BNP Paribas set to begin November 28th
SKILLMAN, NJ (November 15) -- The field for the 2013 Master'U BNP Paribas has been announced, with several ITA standouts participating in the four-day international collegiate team competition from November 28-December 1 in Aix-en-Provence, France.
The eighth annual Master'U BNP Paribas features a unique format that combines men's and women's matches to determine a winner in a best-of-seven format. Two men's and two women's singles matches will be played along with one men's and women's doubles match in addition to a mixed doubles match.
Eight nations: Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia and the United States, will compete for the title with college and university players from around the world.
The USTA announced the United States' field of players, highlighted by 2013 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships singles winner Mitchell Frank of Virginia and Robin Anderson of UCLA, runner-up at both the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Joining Frank on the men's side will be ITA All-American Marcos Giron of UCLA, who was the consolation singles winner at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Doubles Runner-up with Mackenzie McDonald. Peter Kobelt of Ohio State rounds out the men's players. The Buckeye was ranked No. 3 in the ITA Preseason Rankings and was a 2013 All-American in singles.
The other women's players are USC's Sabrina Santamaria, the ITA Preseason No. 1 player in singles and doubles and a two-time ITA All-American in both singles and doubles. Santamaria and doubles partner Kaitlyn Christian won the triple crown (ITA All-American Championship, the USTA/ITA National Indoors Championship and the NCAA Doubles Championship) during the 2012-2013 season. Lauren Herring of Georgia is the final member of Team USA, and she's a 2013 ITA All-American in singles and ranked No. 3 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
All players will be competing in the Master'U BNP Paribas for the first time, and the US team is the defending champion after defeating France 4-3 in last year's final. The United States has won three of the last four Master'U BNP Paribas titles, the others coming in 2011 and 2009. Previous Master'U team members include Steve Johnson, Jarmere Jenkins, Irina Falconi and Maria Sanchez.
Boise State men's coach Greg Patton and California women's coach Amanda Augustus will coach the Master'U team together for the second-straight year. Patton has coached the Master'U team for five of the six consecutive years the US has competed.
Patton said the Master'U is an elite event, and gives the players a unique opportunity to represent both college tennis and their country in an international tournament. "It's a glorious event and festival with the texture and flavor of a Davis Cup or Fed Cup match," he said. "Competing in the Master'U is often the highlight of the players' careers. It's very special."
