National champs clinch No. 1 spot in season-end ranking

SKILLMAN, NJ (May 28) -- The conclusion of the 2013 Men’s and Women’s NCAA Team Championships has propelled the Virginia men and the Stanford women to the top spots in the final ITA College Tennis Rankings. The Cavaliers capped a flawless season (30-0) in dramatic fashion by defeating No. 2 UCLA, 4-3 in the finals of the NCAA Championship, leading to Virginia’s first national title in program history. On the women’s side, Stanford was named NCAA champions for a 17th time in school history, while also becoming the lowest seed in tournament history to win the NCAA Championship.
Follow the Leader: For the men, following Virginia is (in order): UCLA, Georgia, Ohio State, USC, Tennessee, Duke, Pepperdine, Kentucky, and Ole Miss. On the women’s side, Stanford is followed by Florida, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Georgia, USC, UCLA, Miami (FL), Cal, and Michigan.
Conference Count: Men’s Top 25: SEC – 10; ACC – 4; Big 12 & Pac-12 – 3; Big Ten & Conference USA – 2; WCC – 1. The SEC placed four teams inside the Top 10, while the ACC and Pac-12 have two each. Women’s Top 25: ACC – 7; SEC – 6; Pac-12 – 4; Big Ten & Big 12 – 3; Big East & Conference USA – 1. The Pac-12 has four teams inside the Top 10, to go along with three from the SEC and two from the ACC.
Double Dip: A total of 12 schools have both their men’s and women’s programs inside the Top 25. Georgia, UCLA, and USC find both their men’s and women’s teams inside the Top 10.
