Follow the Leader: For the men, following Virginia is (in order): UCLA, USC, Duke, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. On the women’s side, North Carolina is followed by Duke, UCLA, Texas A&M, Florida, Alabama, Northwestern, Michigan, Georgia, and Nebraska.
Conference Count: Men’s Top 25: SEC – 7; ACC & Pac-12 – 4; Big Ten – 3; Big 12 & Ivy League – 2; Conference USA, Missouri Valley, & WCC – 1. Five different conferences have at least one team inside the Top 10, with the SEC leading the way for another consecutive week with four teams. Women’s Top 25: SEC – 6; ACC – 5; Big Ten & Pac-12 – 4; Conference USA & Big 12 – 2; Big East & Big West – 1. Top 25 Caliber: A total of three new teams made their way into the Top 25 this week, including the Drake men and the UC Irvine women, a pair of teams that have not been there all season. The Bulldogs of Drake jumped 11 spots to No. 16 after upsetting former No. 14 Washington, 4-3, while the UC Irvine women moved six spots to No. 24 after extending their win-streak to seven matches with a 4-3 win over former No. 39 Long Beach State. After a month’s absence, the women from Tulsa checked back into the Top 25, earning their way back in with an impressive 6-1 win over former No. 27 Oklahoma State.
Top 75 Newcomers: A total of 15 new teams (8 women, 7 men) cracked the Top 75 this week. Of the 15 teams, six are making their 2013 debut: Men – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UNLV, and Penn State; Women – Elon, Appalachian State, and Loyola Marymount.
