2012 USTA/ITA National Collegiate Wheelchair Championships Produce Three Champions
Alabama and Arizona take home national titles

MOBILE, AL – After three days of competition, the 2012 USTA/ITA National Collegiate Wheelchair Championships has come to a close at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, AL.  The 2012 event took place Oct. 12-14, featuring several of the nation's top collegiate varsity wheelchair players.  The draw format included Tier I singles, Tier II singles and Tier I doubles.

Mackenzie Soldan of the University of Alabama took home the Tier I singles title.  The Tier I singles draw consisted of four players competing in a round robin format.  The level of play was very competitive throughout the round robin as three of the four competitors won two matches apiece. However, after several calculations, it was Soldan who would be crowned the champion by virtue of winning the most sets.

Soldan went 2-1 in three matches with her only loss coming in the form of a walkover.  Her first win of the tournament came in straight sets over Grand Valley State’s Scott Cole.  Then, in her final match of the singles tournament, Soldan pulled out a tight three setter against Arizona’s Pedro Rocha, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 which clinched the title for Soldan.

2012 WCT2singles

The Tier II singles championship went to the University of Arizona’s Kate Stuteville, who refused to relinquish a single set in four matches en route to the title.  Stuteville defeated Alabama’s Karolina Lingyte in the championship final with a 6-4, 6-4 showing.

Stuteville then teamed up with Tier I singles runner-up Pedro Rocha to claim the doubles title.  The duo from Arizona powered their way to the championship, winning 36 of 44 games played.  Stuteville and Rocha topped Grand Valley State’s Chris Melton and Scott Cole in the championship match to claim the doubles crown.
