Selections for the 2012 ITA All-American Championships also released
SKILLMAN, N.J. – College tennis resumes this fall as the nation’s top players are set to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) first national event of the 2012-13 season, as selections for the ITA Men’s All-American Championships have been announced by the ITA. In addition to the All-American field, the 2012 Campbell/ITA Division I Preseason Rankings have also been announced.
For the eighth straight year, the University of Tulsa will be the site of the ITA Men’s All-American Championships. The tournament kicks off with prequalifying matches starting on September 29, while the main draw is set to begin on October 4.
Highlighting this year’s men’s singles field is preseason number one Henrique Cunha of Duke University. Cunha is making his fourth straight All-American singles appearance after racking up 41 wins last year playing exclusively first singles.
Last year Cunha led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA quarterfinal appearance since 2001 and Duke’s second-most wins in program history with 25. He finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Campbell/ITA Singles Rankings and jumps to the top of the preseason rankings this season with year-end No. 1 Steve Johnson (USC) graduating, No. 2 Mitchell Frank (Virginia) out with injury, and No. 3 Eric Quigley (Kentucky) graduating.
The University of Virginia’s Jarmere Jenkins is ranked second in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings. Jenkins had a phenomenal junior season, recording a 30-6 record as well as claiming the ACC Player of the Year award and a No. 6 ranking in the final Campbell/ITA Rankings. Sebastion Fanselow of Pepperdine University moves into the number three slot in the national poll. Last season Fanselow was a consolation finalist at the ITA All-American Championships and was tabbed as the WCC Player of the Year.
Also in this year's Tulsa field and rounding out the Top 10 Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings are (in order): Evan King of Michigan, Nik Scholtz of Mississippi, Costin Paval of Oklahoma, Mate Zsiga of Baylor, 2010 ITA All-American winner Alex Domijan of Virginia, Ray Sarmiento of USC, and KU Singh of Georgia.
The doubles field features the University of Oklahoma’s top-ranked tandem of Costin Paval and Dane Webb. Last year the duo made the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, finishing the 2011-12 season with a 17-4 overall record and a No. 5 ranking in the Campbell/ITA Doubles Rankings.
