STANFORD, Calif. – Baylor senior Taylor Ormond is the recipient of the NCAA Elite 88 Award for the 2011 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship, announced Wednesday by NCAA officials.

The Elite 88, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 88 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Ormond, a Hamilton, Ontario, native majoring in English, currently carries a 3.929 GPA. The senior was presented with the award Wednesday evening during the NCAA Championship banquet at Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University.

On the court, Ormond has battled through a trying season that has seen her come back from fall shoulder surgery and make a big impact on the team down the stretch in the spring. Entering this weekend’s NCAA Round of 16, Ormond has won each of her last six singles matches and three doubles matches in a row.

Ormond becomes the fourth Baylor student-athlete to win the award since its inception prior to the 2009-10 season. All three previous winners came last season, including indoor track and field recipient Jessica Ubanyionwu, outdoor track and field recipient Diamond Richardson and women’s basketball recipient Lindsay Palmer.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
