UW-Whitewater Women's Tennis wins 5th consecutive WIAC title in dominating fashion by winning all nine flights.
-
The weekend could not have gone any better for the Lady Warhawks this weekend as they were able to win all six singles flights without losing a set and they won all three doubles flights. In addition, Kalla Schaefer won the prestigious WIAC scholar-athlete award for 2011!
This was just the third time in WIAC conference history that a team has won all nine flights. The last time it happened was in 2008 when UW-Whitewater also accomplished this feat. The only other time a team did it was in 1982 when Marquette did it, but they were a D-1 team at the time.
On day 1, Saturday, the Hawks put themselves in great shape by dominating the first two rounds of doubles without losing more than 4 games in any one match. They received first round byes in all the singles draws as well, which meant they were able to get out of Nielsen Tennis Stadium early and eat a nice home cooked meal at the Kasten’s home. So we had all of our double teams (#1 Bayliss/Schaefer, #2 Smith/Divelbiss, #3 Kasten/Jackie Vitale) in the finals for Sunday and all of our singles players (Schaefer, Smith, Divelbiss, Bayliss, Kasten, Aguilar) in the semis at the end of the day.
On day 2 the Warhawks started with the semis (then finals) of singles. In the semis no player lost more than 3 games, sending them all to the finals. In the finals of singles each of the players except Bayliss were able to win without dropping more than 4 games! Bayliss used her typical finishing skills to win each set coming from behind against Tresseder. In her first set she was down 3-2, before rolling off the last 4 games. In the second set, she was down 3-4, before rolling off the last three.
So now we just needed to secure the finals of each of the three doubles flights. At #1D it was a back and forth dog-fight against UWEC, but Schaefer was able to hold serve at 8-7 to get the 9-7 win. At #2D it was a battle of very similar style teams against UWL in a very entertaining match, but UWW pulled away in the end 8-3. This left it to Kasten and Vitale to get the sweep for the team. Kasten played very steady and full of energy while Vitale roamed the net putting numerous volleys and overheads away to get the 8-4 win.
To top it all off, Kalla Schaefer’s combination of academics, volunteer work and athletic accomplishments earned her honors of the WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete for Women’s Tennis. This is an honor that we are always proud to get and Schaefer is the 7th tennis player in school history to receive this award. Congrats to Kalla!
