In_The_Spotlight_Logo_smallThis week's ITA: In the Spotlight, we feature the current #1 ranked men's and women's players in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.  These student-athletes have demonstrated constant dedication and hard work to their varsity tennis team.  Each of these players competed in the 2009 ITA Team Indoor Championships held February 13-16.

Arnau BrugesArnau Brugues
is a senior at the University of Tulsa where he is working towards his master's degree in business administration. He is a three-year letter winner, a three-time All-American and a three-time Conference USA Player of the Year. He is from Barcelona, Spain and currently ranked #1 in the Campbell/ITA Tennis Rankings.

Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?
Pete Sampras. I always admired the way he handled himself on a tennis court. He was the best at keeping his emotions hidden, not letting his opponents think he was down, frustrated, or even hurt. He was a positive role model, on and off the court, for young tennis players and athletes in general.

What is the best thing about playing for your university's team (Tulsa)?
The best thing about playing for Tulsa is practicing and spending time with a group of guys that gets along really well, and having coaches and big supporters caring about you as a person, and helping you not only in a tennis court, but in any challenge you might face.

Do you have any pre-match rituals/superstitions?
I do not have any pre-match rituals or superstitions. The only thing is that I hate to play in all white, so when we do, I always wear color wrist bands. I hate to play in all white because I am a huge FCBarcelona fan, and its biggest rival (Real Madrid) plays in an all white uniform.

What is your most memorable tennis experience?
As a spectator at the Davis Cup when Spain won in Barcelona in 2000; Spain defeated Australia 3-1. Also, as a player, the All-American Championship I won in 2006 against John Isner. It was special because I got to play in the final of a national tournament at home in front of my friends and with my parents in the stands.

How has college tennis challenged you as an athlete?
College tennis has challenged me in many different ways in the U.S. Namely, having to study and keep my grades up while concentrating on being the best athlete I can be. I am thankful to have such an opportunity, but it has given me many trials along the way. College tennis has prepared me to reach my goal of playing professional tennis this year. I definitely feel more prepared for that type of commitment than I felt four years ago.

Maria MosolovaMaria Mosolova is a sophomore at Northwestern University from Moscow, Russia. She was selected to the singles ITA All-America Team and was also named the ITA National Player to Watch and Midwest Region Player of the Year in 2008. She was the recipient of the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Year awards last year and is currently ranked #1 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.

Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?
My favorite all-time tennis player is Marat Safin, because every time you watch him playing you don’t know what to expect. It’s like a show. His matches are always fun to watch.

What is the best thing about playing for your university's team (Northwestern)?
The best thing about playing for my university’s team is to know that no matter what happens I will always have my teammates and my coaches there to support me.

Do you have any pre-match rituals/superstitions?
No, no rituals. I'm not superstitious, I do not really believe in it. Nothing can help you to win a match, but yourself.

What is your most memorable tennis experience?
My most memorable tennis experience is playing in the all Junior Grand Slams and practicing right next to Roger Federer and other pros.

How has college tennis challenged you as an athlete?
It’s much harder to play for the team, than just for yourself. You have to be more responsible.
