This week's ITA: In the Spotlight, features a couple of top-ranked players from the ITA Division III Team Indoor Championship Teams.  These student-athletes have demonstrated leadership and hard work to their varsity tennis team throughout the ITA Team Indoor Championship as well as through the 2009 spring season.

LauraChen Laura Chen is a Freshman at Carnegie Mellon University. She is from Port Washington, New York and is currently ranked No. 1 in the Division III Atlantic South region for the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.  Her great efforts on the court supported Carnegie Mellon in their impressive march to win the inaugural ITA Divsion III Women's Team Indoor Championship.

Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?

My favorite all-time tennis player would have to be Justine Henin because of her nice all-around game. Also, I think she proves that the game isn't all about power and size.

What is the best thing about playing for your university's team (Carnegie Mellon)?
The best thing about playing for Carnegie Mellon is playing alongside my teammates and under the coaches who are always there to cheer and support everyone. It is a great feeling to be part of a team that has a lot of potential to succeed.

Do you have any pre-match rituals/superstitions?
I have a couple pre-match rituals and superstitions. For breakfast I usually like to eat oatmeal or cereal, and lots of bananas during the day too. I don't really have any superstitions but during matches I usually bounce the ball three times before I serve.

What is your most memorable tennis experience?
I think that winning this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championship would have to be one of my most memorable tennis experiences. I was proud to be able to contribute to the success of my team and also support and watch my teammates do the same. It was a great experience seeing how our teamwork with each other and our coaches resulted in a great victory.

How has college tennis challenged you as an athlete?
College tennis has challenged me to be more efficient with my time. It has taught me to be able to handle homework while playing and/or traveling to matches on the weekends. It has also taught me how important fitness is because singles is played almost immediately after doubles.

Goodwin_chrisChris Goodwin is a freshman at Emory University.  He is from Rockville, Maryland, and is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.  Chris scored the clinching point for his team to capture the Emory Eagles's third ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship title.

Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?
My favorite all-time tennis player is Roger Federer because he has such great variety to his game.  He is more fun to watch than most of the other professional players.

What is the best thing about playing for your university's team (Emory)?
The best thing about playing for Emory is playing alongside and hanging out with my teammates.

Do you have any pre-match rituals/superstitions?
I do not have any strange supersitions or anything.  I just put on my Emory Tennis uniform before each match.

What is your most memorable tennis experience?
My most memorable tennis experience was winning the doubles title at the ITA National Small College Championships in the fall with my brother (Michael).  Also, winning the ITA Team Indoor Championship with my team this winter was a great experience.

How has college tennis challenged you as an athlete?
Playing a doubles and singles match back to back is a new and challenging experience for me.  It is definitely an adjustment playing more doubles than I did in juniors, but I like it better this way.
