PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – For the second consecutive year, the top three seeds at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships have all fallen before making it to the semifinals on Saturday. This event is the first of three national championship events played during the collegiate tennis season. Its men's counterpart is taking place this week in Tulsa, Okla.
Top-seeded Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas was upset in the second round by Arizona State’s Kelcy McKenna, while No. 2 seed Ani Mijacika of Clemson and No. 3 seed of Georgia Tech each lost in the quarterfinals. After two days of play at the Riviera Tennis Club, only two of the top eight seeds remain and have advanced to play in the semifinals.
Mijacika won the first set against Auburn’s Fani Chifchieva who won a thrilling three-set match over Furman’s Laura Gioia in the second round, but could not overcome Chifchieva in the end who came back to win another hotly contested three-set match, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Among those that advanced to the quarterfinals were a pair of teammates from Northwestern. Georgia Rose and Maria Mosolova both won their second round matches in straight sets. Rose upset fourth-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford in the second round before falling to Cal’s Marina Cossou 7-6 (2), 6-4. Cossou, the No. 7 seed, will face Chifchieva in the semifinals.
Rose’s teammate, sixth-seeded Mosolova defeated the No. 3 seed and 2008 ITA National Player of the Year, Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech to advance to the semifinals where she will face McKenna. In a matchup that features the top remaining seed in the tournament in Mosolova against McKenna who continues her impressive run with wins over top-seeded Miseviciute and Laura Vallverdu of Miami (FL).
In doubles action, McDowell and Irina Falconi took down the top-seeded Fresno Stateteam of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe, 8-3. However, Gloria and Rowe’s teammates Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova moved on joining McDowell and Falconi along with two more ACC doubles teams in Duke’s Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson as well as Vallverdu and Michaela Kissell of Miami.
