Top Seed Falls in the Second Round at the Riviera Women’s All-American

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – For the second consecutive year, the No. 1 seed at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships will not make it past the second round of play. Top-seeded Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas was upset by Arizona State’s Kelcy McKenna in two hotly contested tiebreaker sets, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). This event is the first of three national championship events played during the collegiate tennis season. Its men's counterpart is taking place this week in Tulsa, Okla.

After the first round of play, the top four seeds and six of the top eight seeds were victorious but after today’s second round matches, only half of the top eight seeds remain in the draw and will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal matches.

Among those advancing to the quarterfinals are a pair of teammates from Northwestern. Georgia Rose and Maria Mosolova both won their second round matches in straight sets. Rose upset fourth-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford, 7-6 (2), 6-3 and will face Cal’s Marina Cossou, who defeated Ragini Acharya of William & Mary, 6-4, 6-4. Sixth-seeded Mosolova ended Miami’s Bianca Eichkorn’s qualifying run with a 6-2, 6-3 win and will face No. 3 seed Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech in tomorrow’s action.

Another quarterfinal features Eichkorn’s teammate Laura Vallverdu who put a stop to Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson’s qualifying run and will match up against McKenna after she knocked off the tournament’s top seed.

The top seed remaining in the draw is second-seeded Ani Mijacika of Clemson who defeated Irina Falconi, 7-6 (3) 5-7 6-3. She will face Fani Chifchieva of Auburn, who won a thrilling three-set match 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2) over Furman’s Laura Gioia.

In doubles action, McDowell and Falconi took down the top-seeded Fresno State team of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe, 8-3. However, Gloria and Rowe’s teammates Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova moved on joining McDowell and Falconi along with two more ACC doubles teams in Duke’s Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson as well as Vallverdu and Michaela Kissell of Miami.
