2010 Spring Season Outlook
The Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Tennis team is looking forward to a fantastic 2010 season. The return ing All-Americans and NCAA Championship Finalists Siobhan Finicane and Olivia Muesse make up the backbone of the team, along with their fellow seniors, Zoe Fisher and Chloe Schaefer. Other returning players include Nicole Holsted, Paige Wolstencroft, Emily Kawahara and Ellie Shanholt.
Also added to the team for this season is a very strong freshman class. This class has already seen great success in their opening event in their college careers, the ITA Fall West Regional Tournment. Jamie Solomon was a semi-finalist in the main singles draw, losing to teammate Finicane. Finicane fought for over 3 hours in the finals match, finally losing in a heart-breaking tie-break in the third set. Solomon and partner Kara Wang, also a freshman, were also doubles finalists, losing in three sets. Freshman Jessica Hsu won the singles back draw of the tournament, while she and sophomore partner Nicole Holsted were semi-finalists in doubles. Holsted was also a quarter-finalist in singles. Senior Zoe Fisher and sophomore Emily Kawahara partnered to win the doubles back draw.
With this strong fall showing, the PP team is excited to start up our spring season. We kick off our matches in San Diego on February 5 and 6, playing UC San Diego (DII) and Point Loma Nazarene (NAIA). We then return home to open our conference matches. We begin playing our very strong national schedule with Carnegie Mellon in early March, and we will play Vassar, Trinity (TX), Bowdoin, Amherst, Williams, Wellesley, Linfield and Gustavus Adolphus during the same month, all at our home courts. Our regular season will conclude with remaining conference matches, our conference tournament , and travel to the Ojai Vally Tournament in April, at which point we look to continue in post-season play with the NCAA DIII Regional and National Championships.
Both returning and new players are itching to attack this strong schedule and defend our ranking as the #1 team in the West, while continuing to move up in the national rankings from our current spot at #7!
