#RivieraITA Friday Recap: Semifinal Match-Ups Decided On Day Two
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - After another day of high-level competition at the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, four doubles teams and four singles players claimed their spots in the semifinals round of the main draws.
The morning got off to an exciting start as Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay of North Carolina upset top-seeded duo Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan of Florida, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Carter and Kay will face Georgia's Mariana Gould and Ellen Perez in the semifinals tomorrow. Gould and Perez booked their ticket to the semis by defeating Duke's qualifying doubles team Ellyse Hamlin and Beatrice Capra 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
Seventh-seeded team Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox of Pepperdine also claimed a spot in the doubles semifinals after posting an upset victory. The duo took down third-seeded Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt, 8-4. The second doubles semifinals match-up will be a battle of the in-state teams as Cutura and Maddox will face California's No. 2 seed pair of Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr. Manasse and Starr defeated Georgia Tech's Paige Hourigan and Kendal Woodard 8-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Singles semifinals match-ups were also finalized today after the players battled through two rounds of competition at the Riviera Tennis Club.
UGA sophomore Perez is set to represent the Bulldogs in the first semifinals match of the day where she will take on Miami's Sinead Lohan. Lohan started off main draw action by taking out No. 2 seed Julia Elbaba (ranked third in the Oracle/ITA Preseason Division I Women's rankings) of Virginia in the round of 32. Lohan secured her spot in the semifinals by defeating Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M in the round of 16 and Stanford's Taylor Davidson in the quarterfinals (6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1).
The second semifinals battle tomorrow will be a rematch of the 2015 Oracle/ITA Masters semifinals as Virginia's No. 7 seed Danielle Collins will face No. 3 seed Manasse (Cal). Collins swiftly defeated Stanford's Caroline Doyle (6-1, 6-3) and upset No. 1 seed Austin (Florida) in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) on her way to the semis.
Manasse also won both of her Friday matches in two sets, defeating Northwestern's Maddie Lipp (6-3, 6-0) and qualifier Belinda Woolcock of Florida (6-4, 6-4) en route to the semifinals.
The 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships resume tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. PT, with the singles semifinals match-ups followed by the doubles semifinals.
