What To Watch – March 4-6

While schools in the SEC and ACC mainly play conference matches this weekend, the Big Ten and Big 12 will hold off for another week or so and continue to play non-conference matches.

Men’s Tennis
Third-ranked TCU (8-2) was in the Midwest last weekend but this weekend it makes its way to Florida to play No. 17 South Florida (7-4). The Horned Frogs are coming off road wins over No. 55 Wisconsin and No. 11 Illinois. The Bulls split matches last weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, by picking up a win over No. 71 Boise State before falling to No. 5 Oklahoma State. This will be the second all-time meeting between these two programs with TCU winning the first meeting back in 2009.

Texas A&M (11-3), ranked No. 8, opens up SEC conference play this weekend by hosting No. 30 Florida (5-3). The Aggies have been idle since defeating No. 11 Illinois two weeks ago, while the Gators shutout its in-state rival No. 47 Florida State last Saturday. Texas A&M has won the last three in the series with Florida’s last win coming back in March 2013.

Fourth-ranked Ohio State (14-1) travels to Norman, Oklahoma, on Sunday to face No. 13 Oklahoma (7-4) in a match that will be nationally televised on Fox College Sports. The Buckeyes have won five straight and are coming off wins over No. 24 Penn State and No. 41 Notre Dame. The Sooners split matches last weekend picking up a win over No. 23 Memphis while falling to No. 27 Arkansas. Last season Oklahoma snapped Ohio State’s NCAA record 200-match home winning streak with a 4-3 win in a match that was decided in a third-set tiebreak at No. 6 singles.

Women’s Tennis
Third-ranked North Carolina (12-2) opened up conference play at home last weekend, but this Friday it will be in Charlottesville, Virginia, to meet No. 16 Virginia (7-3). North Carolina is coming off wins over No. 21 Miami and No. 71 Florida, while Virginia has won its last three after defeating No. 24 Syracuse, Louisville, and Norfolk State. The teams split meetings last season with North Carolina winning at home while Virginia won in Cary, North Carolina, at the ACC Tournament.

Wichita State (12-3), ranked No. 13, crosses the border into Oklahoma this weekend to face No. 18 Tulsa (12-1). The Shockers have won eight of its last nine and are coming off wins over No. 23 Kansas and No. 51 New Mexico. The Golden Hurricane, who is hosting this year’s NCAA Division I Championships, have won seven in-a-row, with five of those wins coming over ranked opponents. Wichita State won last season’s meeting at home, which was its first win over Tulsa since 2008.

Eighth-ranked Vanderbilt (7-2), who is the defending SEC and NCAA champion, opens up conference play at home against No. 17 Kentucky (11-1). The Commodores last played two weeks ago when it defeated No. 46 Baylor. The Wildcats have won 10 straight and are coming off wins over Tennessee-Martin and Samford. Vanderbilt has won the last 19 matches in the series, including a 4-2 win last season in Lexington, with Kentucky’s last win coming back in 1997.
