What To Watch – March 17-20

Last weekend was full of upsets with one higher ranked team after another going down, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens this weekend.

Men’s Tennis
USC (8-3), ranked No. 12, heads to the desert this weekend to meet No. 15 Oklahoma (7-6) as part of the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge Presented by Oracle. The Trojans are coming off a win at No. 29 Tulsa, while Oklahoma is coming off a 4-3 loss to No. 1 Virginia in a match that took place in Tulsa. The last two times these teams met a championship was on the line – Oklahoma defeated USC at the 2015 ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship, and USC defeated Oklahoma at the 2014 NCAA Championship.

Twenty-third ranked Florida State (11-4), one week removed from upsetting then-No. 1 North Carolina, hits the road this weekend to face current No. 1 Virginia (12-2). In addition to defeating North Carolina, Florida State also defeated No. 69 Duke, while Virginia is coming off wins at No. 29 Tulsa and over No. 15 Oklahoma. Virginia leads the all-time series 25-10 with Florida State’s last win coming back in 2003.

Georgia (8-3), ranked No. 19, welcomes in No. 4 Ohio State (15-1) for a Sunday afternoon match in Athens. The Bulldogs have won four in-a-row and are coming off a 5-2 win at No.  68 Vanderbilt, while the Buckeyes have won six in-a-row and are coming off a 4-1 win at No. 15 Oklahoma. Georgia leads the all-time series 11-4, although Ohio State has won four of the last six meetings.

Women’s Tennis
Fourth-ranked Georgia (10-1) welcomes in No. 10 Virginia (9-4) for a mid-week non-conference match in Athens. The Bulldogs have won five in-a-row and most recently defeated No. 15 Auburn and No. 43 Alabama, while the Cavaliers are coming off a 4-2 win over No. 6 Michigan. This will be the fourth all-time meeting with Georgia leading the series 2-1, although Virginia won last year’s contest 4-2.

Clemson (7-5), ranked No. 21, hits the road this weekend for a Sunday afternoon match at No. 17 Stanford (7-3). The Tigers are coming off a weekend sweep of No. 40 Syracuse and No. 60 Florida State, while the Cardinal is coming off a 5-1 win over No. 28 UCLA. Stanford leads the all-time series 11-0.

Fifth-ranked Pepperdine (9-1) goes north this weekend to the bay area to play No. 1 California (12-0). The Waves are coming off a road win at Long Beach State and a home win over No. 42 North Carolina State while both of Cal’s matches last weekend, versus No. 48 USC and No. 28 UCLA, were rained out.  California leads the all-time series 31-6 with Pepperdine’s last win coming in 2000.
