What To Watch: Feb. 26-28, 2016
If you like history and records, then this is the weekend for you. Two of the all-time great programs on both the men’s and women’s side meet in Palo Alto, California, while a pair of Top 10 newcomers face each other in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Fourth-ranked UCLA (8-2) travels north to the Bay Area for a non-conference match with fellow Pac-12 member No. 29 Stanford (5-4). The Bruins are coming off a 7-0 win over No. 62 UC Irvine, while Stanford lost a 4-3 heartbreaker last Saturday to No. 12 California. UCLA has won seven of the last eight in the series, but Stanford won the last time out in April 2015 in Palo Alto.
Virginia (8-1), ranked No. 2, will play its first match since the National Team Indoors when it heads to Champaign, Illinois, on Saturday evening to play No. 11 Illinois (6-4). The Fighting Illini is coming off a tough 4-2 loss to No. 7 Texas A&M while Virginia lost 4-2 to No. 1 North Carolina in the finals of the National Team Indoors. Virginia leads the all-time series 10-2, but the teams haven’t met since Virginia won 4-0 in the 2011 NCAA Round of 16.
Sixth-ranked Texas Tech (14-1) finishes off its weekend by going to Winston-Salem to face No. 5 Wake Forest (9-2). Both achieved program-best rankings this week with Wake Forest rising to No. 5 and Texas Tech moving up to No. 6. Texas Tech is coming off a weekend sweep over UTSA and Utah State, while Wake Forest will be playing its first matches since the National Team Indoors. Both will face a test prior to this meeting with Wake Forest hosting No. 26 Texas on Saturday and Texas Tech meets No. 25 North Carolina State in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday.
Seventh-ranked Florida (5-0) will hit the road this weekend for a pair of tough matches against the Bay Area’s finest. The Gators will face No. 1 California (9-0) on Friday afternoon in a match that will be broadcast nationally on the Pac-12 Network, as well as online at www.Pac-12.com. Both teams are undefeated with Cal coming off notable wins over No. 29 UCLA and No. 38 USC, while Florida last played two weeks ago when it defeated No. 34 Clemson and No. 45 Baylor.
Miami (4-2), ranked No. 13, will be looking for its first win since Jan. 29 when it heads to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Friday to face No. 6 North Carolina (10-2). Miami hosted then-No. 29 Baylor two weeks ago, but play was suspended due to rain shortly after the doubles point was completed. North Carolina won its first 10 matches, but will be looking to rebound after two straight losses. The Tar Heels won all three meetings last season and the three the year prior, with Miami’s last win in the series coming in the semifinals of the 2013 ACC Tournament.
Florida’s second match of the weekend will take place on Sunday afternoon on the other side of the bay as the Gators meet No. 16 Stanford (4-2). The Cardinal is coming off a pair of 7-0 wins over No. 26 Fresno State and TCU after dropping a pair earlier in the month to No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 22 Ole Miss. These two programs have combined to win 23 of the 34 NCAA Women’s Championships with Stanford winning 17 and Florida winning six. Florida won 4-3 last season, in Gainesville, Florida, in a match that was decided in a third set at No. 3 singles.
