What To Watch – 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend
I think everyone knows what to watch this weekend, the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, so what I’ll do is point out some of the strongest regionals on the men’s and women’s side in terms of ranking.
The men’s regional at the University of Oklahoma is the only regional on either side to have four Top 25 teams participating with Oklahoma ranked No. 16, Illinois No. 17, Michigan No. 19, and Arkansas No. 25. Oklahoma and Michigan square off in one opening round match while Illinois and Arkansas meet in the other. Illinois is the only one of the four that has yet to play while Arkansas is 2-2, Oklahoma is 2-1, and Michigan is 1-0.
The Oklahoma State and Texas A&M men’s regionals will each have three ranked teams while the other participant also received votes in the most recent top 25. Oklahoma State is the highest ranked team in its regional at No. 13 while Kentucky is No. 14 and Columbia No. 22. Kentucky and Tulsa will open up the regional on Friday afternoon with Oklahoma State and Columbia to follow. Texas A&M, ranked No. 15, will host No. 21 Baylor in the late match on Saturday in College Station while No. 23 SMU and Ole Miss kick off the day at high noon.
There are two regionals on the women’s side that will have three ranked participants. Texas Tech, ranked No. 13, will host unranked UC Santa Barbara while No. 16 South Carolina and No. 21 Arizona State play at the same time on the other six courts in Lubbock. Georgia Tech, ranked No. 11, welcomes in No. 20 Kentucky, No. 24 UCLA, and unranked Penn. Georgia Tech and Penn play the early match with Kentucky and UCLA following in the mid-afternoon slot.
