CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, was the place to be on Friday, as the 2017 ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship got underway with eight entertaining first-round matches.
Most of the top seeds held firm, while a pair of teams from the Big 12 Conference scored opening round upsets. Oklahoma State, the No. 11 seed, held off a late charge by No. 6 Northwestern and defeated the Wildcats 4-2, while the No. 10 Longhorns of Texas also had to work hard to close out their contest with No. 7 Florida 4-2.

Oklahoma State kicked off its match with Northwestern by securing the doubles point, and then raced out to a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of singles victories. The Wildcats closed within 3-2, and were making moves on the two remaining courts, but Julian Cash scored the match-clinching point for Oklahoma State at No. 1 singles, as he defeated Strong Kirchheimer 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
The Cowboys advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round with the win, and will take on No. 3 Ohio State, which defeated Oklahoma State’s in-state rival Oklahoma 4-0. The No. 13 Sooners were up a set in each of the three remaining matches against the Buckeyes, who were buoyed by wins at No. 1 singles (Mikael Torpegaard def. Andrew Harris 7-6 (4), 6-1), No. 2 singles (Hugo Di Feo def. Spencer Papa 7-5, 6-3) and No. 5 singles (Martin Joyce def. Adrian Oetzbach 6-1, 6-3).
Wake Forest, the No. 2 seed in the #ITAIndoors field, looked impressive in its 4-0 win over No. 15 Mississippi State. The Demon Deacons will take on No. 10 Texas, which outlasted No. 7 Florida 4-2. The Longhorns were carried to victory by Rodrigo Banzer at No. 6 singles, who defeated the Gators’ Jordan Belga in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The fourth-seeded Golden Bears of Cal advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over No. 13 Baylor, and will face defending #ITAIndoors champion, North Carolina. The fifth-seeded Tar Heels earned a 4-2 decision versus No. 12 Georgia.
Top-seeded and host Virginia took down No. 16 Utah State 4-0, while the No. 8 versus No. 9 battle between cross-town rivals UCLA and USC fittingly went down to the wire.
Knotted 3-3, the contest boiled down to a No. 1 singles showdown between Martin Redlicki of UCLA and Brandon Holt of USC. Holt took the first set in a tiebreak and Redlicki answered with 6-3 victory in the second set, setting the stage for a third set battle. Redlicki, No. 73 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis National Singles Rankings, won the set 6-4 over No. 13 Holt, giving the Bruins the 4-3 victory.
