PlaySight-ITA Match of the Week

Date: Saturday March 5, 2016
Time: 11 a.m. CT
Location: Hurd Tennis Center, Baylor University, Waco, Texas.
Teams Playing: No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 46 Baylor Bears

Overview:

The top-ranked Buckeyes (who are now featured here for the consecutive week) head into Waco riding high.

“Obviously, we’re excited,” said coach Melissa Schaub, who quickly added that the Buckeyes are determined not to go overboard about the ranking. “We broke into the top 10 for the first time a few weeks ago and said, ‘Good job, congratulations, but let’s not talk about this again.’”

The turnaround began two years ago with the arrival of current juniors Ferny Angeles Paz, Gabriella De Santis, Miho Kowase and Sandy Niehaus. But the “game-changer,” as Schaub described her, was the addition of freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo from New Albany. Di Lorenzo is No. 1 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings.

The Bears are looking to create some positive momentum – and they have had some recent success against top-ranked teams.

The Buckeyes (12-1) assumed the No. 1 ranking on Tuesday. Their only loss is to now second-ranked California. Ohio State's lineup features the No. 1 ranked player, Di Lorenzo, as well as Niehaus at No. 77 and Olivia Sneed at No. 102. In doubles, Anna Sanford and Kowase hold the No. 4 ranking, and Niehaus and Paz sit at No. 32.

The Bears hold a 2-1 record over the Buckeyes in the all-time series by winning the last two meetings. Most recently, Baylor took a 4-0 win on March 1 of last year.

Baylor last played a No. 1 team on May 17, 2015, losing to top-ranked USC in the NCAA quarterfinals in Waco. BU is 0-6 all-time against No. 1 teams under head coach Joey Scrivano.

Prior to each match, the team will host a session of the Baylor Cub Tennis Program. Children 11-years-old and under can come to the Hurd Tennis Center one hour before first serve to receive free basic tennis instruction.
