Location: Combe Tennis Center, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.
Teams Playing (men): No. 8 Illinois at No. 11 Northwestern Wildcats
Arvid Swan’s Northwestern squad is peaking at the right time heading into this important matchup. The Wildcats have been using Smart Court technology in home practices, training sessions, and matches, and it has been paying off in a big way.
The Northwestern men's tennis team is ranked in the nation's Top 10, according to the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Tuesday afternoon. The poll has the Wildcats at No. 9, a six-spot climb from last week's position.
Northwestern is in the midst of a nine-match win streak, and at 12-1, has climbed all the way from No. 26 at the beginning of the season to their current spot among the best in college tennis.
The Wildcats are being led by their ‘Big 3’ players.
Meet the "Big Three" of Northwestern men's tennis: Strong Kirchheimer, Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba.
Head coach Arvid Swan cites the group's tremendous dedication as a source of strength this season, while building on previous seasons. Over the course of the last year, Swan has witnessed Shropshire's serve and forehand become a "really big weapon" on the court, in addition to improvements in Zieba's rally ball, forehand and serve which have become key to his success when facing tough opponents. With Kirchheimer, Swan says, his serve and ability to control play has been an asset to his game.
The Fighting Illini dropped a close contest to TCU last weekend but are sitting pretty at the eighth overall spot in the Oracle/ITA rankings. Their team has also had some very strong individual performances this season.
Fighting Illini men's tennis senior Jared Hiltzik was named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, March 1, as announced by the league office. Hiltzik went 3-0 over the weekend, helping the Orange and Blue knock off No. 2 Virginia at home. The honor is the first for Hiltzik this season and sixth of his career. It marks the third time this season an Illini men's tennis player has received the award, as Aleks Vukic has garnered the laurel twice this season.
Playing at Illinois' No. 1 singles, Hilzik defeated two ranked players. The Wilmette, Illinois, native defeated No. 29 Collin Altamirano of Virginia 6-2, 6-3 and No. 24 Alex Rybakov of TCU 6-4, 7-6. He also teamed up with Alex Jesse at No. 1 doubles to defeat Norrie/Johnson of TCU 6-0.
