Riviera Day One

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.
 - Underneath a picturesque setting at the Riviera Tennis Club, a day of intense competition saw three of the top eight singles fall in the opening round of main draw play in the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.

Ohio State's Francesca Di Lorenzo, the nation's top-ranked newcomer/freshman, defeated No. 4 seed Josie Kuhlman of Florida. Unseeded Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan also claimed an upset win on day one as she took down No. 8 seed Hayley Carter (North Carolina).
 
Singles action ended with an impressive upset victory from Sinead Lohan of Miami (FL), ranked No. 13 in the Oracle/ITA Preseason Division I Women's National Singles Rankings, as she took out No. 2 seed/No. 3 nationally-ranked Julia Elbaba of Virginia in three sets; 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
All other seeded players survived the first round; No. 1 seed Brooke Austin (Florida) def. Jasmine Lee (Mississippi State) 6-2, 7-6 (5); No. 3 Maegan Manasse (Cal) def.Saska Gavrilovska (Texas A&M) 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1; No. 5 Stephanie Wagner (Miami (FL)) def. Luisa Stefani (Pepperdine) 6-0, 7-5; No. 6 Sydney Campbell (Vanderbilt) def. Erin Routliffe (Alabama) 7-6 (5), 6-2; and No. 7 Danielle Collins (Virginia) def. Giuliana Olmos (USC), 6-0, 6-2.
 
Qualifiers also saw success in singles competition as top-ranked freshman Di Lorenzo, Belinda Woolcock (Florida), Ellen Perez (Georgia), and Breauna Addison (Texas) all picked up wins in the first round.
 
Addison, who was playing her fourth singles match in the last three days, knew her first main draw matchup would take some fight.
 
"Frances (Altick) and I both came through qualifying play so I knew it would be a tough battle," Addison said about her 7-5, 6-3 win over her Vanderbilt opponent. "It was more mental than anything. I knew she was going to be ready to play more than some people who were just playing their first match of the tournament. She definitely gave me a battle out there and made me earn it."
 
The day began with the opening round of main draw doubles action. The eight seeded teams received a bye for the first round of competition. North Carolina's Carter andWhitney Kay claimed the first win of the day as they swiftly defeated qualifying USC duo Gabby Smith and Jessica Failla 8-1. Ines Deheza and Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M also posted an 8-1 victory over Gabriella Castaneda and Emily Fanning from Florida State.
 
The morning doubles session was also highlighted by wins from two qualifying doubles teams. Blair Shankle and Kiah Generette of Baylor posted an 8-3 win over qualifying duo Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State. Duke's qualifying doubles pair of Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin defeated Yuliya Lysa andShannon Hudson of Arkansas, 8-5

A second round of doubles closed out the first day of main draw action. Capra and Hamlin (Duke) survived yet another round of competition as they upset Texas A&M's fourth-seeded duo of Rachel Pierson and Eva Paalma, 8-4.
 
Carter and Kay also pulled off an upset to advance to the quarterfinals as they defeated No. 8 seed Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson of Notre Dame, 8-4. Georgia duo of Ellen Perez and Mariana Gould upset No. 5 seed Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad (8-5) to end the day.
 
All other seeded doubles teams came through with wins to secure their spots in the next round. No. 1 seeded Austin/Kourtney Keegan (Florida) def. Taylor Ng andKristina Mathis (Dartmouth), 8-2; No. 2 seed Manasse/Denise Starr (Cal) def. Silvia Garcia and Kennedy Shaffer (Georgia), 8-6; No. 3 Campbell/Courtney Colton(Vanderbilt) def. Hristov/Deheza (Texas A&M), 8-3; No. 6 seed Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan (Georgia Tech) def. Shankle/Generette (Baylor) 8-5; No. 7 seed Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox (Pepperdine) def. Pleun Burgmans and Paula de Man (Auburn), 8-7 (4).
 
The 2015 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships resume tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. PT, with doubles followed by two rounds of singles play.
