Oracle Cup Sunday Recap1-2017-10-15

ROME, Ga. –
On the final day of competition at the 2017 ITA Oracle Cup, NAIA and Division III reigned supreme in the men’s and women’s Oracle Cup championship matches at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

Georgia Gwinnett’s Kevin Konfederak and Gilad Berman took on Azusa Pacific’s Oliver Frank and Christian Schmid out of Division II. Konfederak and Berman grabbed the opening set 6-4 and won the final three games of the second set to secure the match 6-4 and the team’s place in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

The women’s doubles final featured Wesleyan’s Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu from Division III versus Indianapolis’s Hanna Volikova and Alina Kislitskaya from Division II. The two teams split the first eight games of the opening set, before Wesleyan turned the tide and won the final two to claim the set. In the second, Chong and Yu found their stride and never relented, and secured the championship with a 6-2 margin in the second set. With the win, Chong and Yu advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

Konfederak and Chong both qualified for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in singles and doubles.

Gbaguidi, Levin Win James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Awards
Camille Gbaguidi of SCAD and Daniel Levine of Carnegie Mellon were awarded the James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Awards on Saturday.

The James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award honors players who display outstanding sportsmanship and exemplify the spirit of college tennis during the ITA Oracle Cup. To be eligible for this award, the players had to reach the finals in their divisional draw.

The award is given in memory of Jim Sargent, former Media Manager for Rolex Watch, USA, who was the victim of a fatal car accident in 2000. Jim was a great friend of college tennis, an ITA All-American who competed with outstanding success and sportsmanship at Lynchburg College, and afterwards continued as a special partner to the ITA in his role with Rolex.
