DIII Women's National Team Indoors Sunday Recap-2017-03-05

MURFREESBORO, TN –
After several hours of back-and-forth competition, Sunday’s final at the 2017 ITA Division III National Women’s Team Indoor Championship came down to a single set at the Adams Tennis Center.

With No. 1 Emory and No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer deadlocked 4-4, the No. 3 singles match between the Eagles’ Daniela Lopez and the Sagehens’ Mae Coyiuto would prove to be the ultimate decider. Lopez had to battle back from a set down to get past her opponent 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the match – and championship – for the Eagles 5-4.

The defending NCAA Division III national champion Eagles claimed a 2-1 lead over the 2016 #ITAIndoors champion Sagehens following doubles play. Pomona-Pitzer worked quickly to even the score as Maryann Zhao took down 12th-ranked Michelle Satterfield 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Emory would re-take the lead again 3-2 following Melissa Goodman’s 6-2, 6-3 decision over No. 33 Grace Hruska at No. 5 singles. Caroline Casper, the nation’s No. 6-ranked singles player, defeated No. 1 Bridget Harding in three sets at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 to again pull the match even.

Katarina Su moved the Eagles within a point of clinching the match with a three-set win over Arianna Chen at No. 4 singles (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), but as was the case all match, the Sagehens refused to go quietly. Emily Chen scored a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Michelle DeMeo at No. 6 singles, forcing the match even at 4-4, and setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion over at No. 4 singles.

In the morning’s third-place match, No. 3 Chicago defeated No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis 5-2.
