NEW HAVEN, CT – The semifinals of the 2017 ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship are set following Saturday’s quarterfinal round at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut.
The day got off to a thrilling start as No. 6 seed Ohio State took down No. 3 seed Oklahoma State in a tight 4-3 battle. The match came down to the third set of the No. 6 singles match where Ohio State’s Miho Kowase prevailed over the Cowgirl’s Carla Tur Mari; 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Buckeyes, advancing to the semifinals for a second straight year, will face No. 2 seed North Carolina in the next round of action. The Tar Heels earned their spot in the semifinals with a 4-2 victory over defending #ITAIndoors champ California (7 seed). UNC sophomore Jessie Aney clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-4 win over Cal’s Denise Starr at the No. 3 singles position.
The top-ranked and No. 1 seeded Florida Gators posted a 4-1 win over Texas Tech to advance to the semifinals. The Gator’s victory was backed by singles wins from Belinda Woolcock, Ingrid Neel, and Josie Kuhlman and doubles victories from Kourtney Keegan/Brooke Austin and Anna Danilina/Neel.
The No. 5 seed Georgia Bulldogs topped No. 4 seed Pepperdine to claim the final spot in the semifinals setting up an all-SEC battle for Sunday. Georgia freshman Marta Gonzalez provided the clinching victory for the Bulldogs posting a tight 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Apichaya Rundlerdkriangkrai at No. 5 singles.
