INDIAN WELLS, Calif. –
The message Andrea Lazaro repeated to herself all week at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships was a simple one.

Fight.

The Florida International University senior showed a tremendous ability to dig deep and overcome adversity. She won three, three-set matches during the week, including her final one, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 11 Samantha Harris of Duke in Sunday’s women’s singles final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

“This is a tremendous honor and I’m so happy,” said Lazaro, who celebrated her 23rd birthday on Saturday with a win in the semifinals.

Nuno Borges of Mississippi State claimed the men’s singles title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 3 Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest. Borges, the top seed in the tournament, did not drop a set all week en route to the national championship.

“This means a lot and it’s a great accomplishment,” said Borges. “This brings me a lot of confidence.”
