SKILLMAN, NJ (March 26) - The Barry women and West Florida men both bested the previous No. 1 teams to earn their new positions atop the ITA Division II National Team Rankings.

 

The Buccaneers fell behind 2-1 in doubles against defending NCAA Team Champion Armstrong Atlantic, but battled back for the 5-4 win to deliver the Pirates their first and only loss. Barry remains undefeated in Division II competition, having been edged by nationally-ranked Division I opponent North Florida, 5-4.

 

West Florida snapped Barry's 41-match winning streak en route to the team's 12th straight win of the spring season on March 11, and has since added four wins to earn its spotless 15-0 record. The Argonauts earned their first No. 1 ranking since May 11, 2007.

 

In men's singles, Bruno Savi of West Florida remains in the top spot thanks to a 15-0 spring campaign thus far. Savi previously won singles titles at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships and the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships.

 

Valentine Confalonieri of Lynn University also held her post atop the women's singles rankings. The Fighting Knight won the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships title, the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships singles title and the Women's Singles Super Bowl at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, qualifying her for the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships where she won her first round match before falling to finalist Robin Anderson (UCLA).

 

In men's doubles, Petr Michnev and Thibaud Berland of Hawaii Pacific unseated Concordia's Daniele Piludu and Benas Majauskas by rattling off 14 wins without a loss and knocking off two Top 5 teams in the process. On the women's side, Confalonieri paired with Ioana Ivan to earn the No. 1 spot with a 16-1 record and four Top 10 wins. The duo finished as runners-up in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.

 

Follow the Leader: For the men, following West Florida is (in order): Barry, Hawaii Pacific, St. Leo, Armstrong Atlantic, Concordia, Lander, Lynn, Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific. For the women, following Barry is: Armstrong Atlantic, BYU Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific, Lynn, Columbus State, St. Leo, Rollins, West Florida and Florida Southern.

 

Double-Dip:  A total of 15 schools have both their men's and women's programs ranked inside the Top 25. Armstrong Atlantic, Barry, Hawaii Pacific, Lynn, Saint Leo and West Florida find both their men's and women's team inside the Top 10.

 

Top 25 Caliber: Two men's teams have cracked the Top 25 in this week's ranking.  Drury moved up 15 spots to No. 12 after wins over No. 20 Northwestern Missouri and No. 9 Columbus State. NYIT made an even more significant jump, increasing 27 spots to No. 19 after besting three of four ranked opponents in March. On the women's side, Shorter (No. 22) and Flagler (No. 24) came from outside the Top 50 to earn spots in the Top 25. Both the Lady Hawks and Saints posted multiple ranked wins.

 

Top 50 Newcomers:  Nine teams made debuts inside the Top 50 this week.  In the men's rankings, four new teams are now ranked: North Georgia (No. 35), Tiffin University (No. 36), Bluefield State (No. 41) and Young Harris (No. 46). Joining Shorter and Flagler on the women's side are Lander (No. 40) and Grand Valley (No. 46) and Lewis (No. 47).

 

Coming up Next: The ITA Division II Rankings will be published again on Wednesday, April 23 as regional team, singles and doubles teams will be announced.  On April 30 the national team, singles and doubles teams will also be published.
