2013 ITA/USTA National Summer Championships Final Results
BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 13) - The 2013 ITA/USTA National Summer Championships concluded today in Bloomington, IN, with the event capping off a great summer of tennis action in the 2013 ITA Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA.
Koch/Cox (South Carolina) def. Lawson/Montoya (Notre Dame): 8-1
Chip Cox and Kyle Koch from South Carolina dominated from start to finish in the championship round. Koch and Cox took control of the match with their returns, leading to three straight breaks of serve. The Gamecock duo was also able to hold serve, racing to a 7-0 lead over Notre Dame's Alex Lawson and Nicolas Montoya. After a service hold by the Notre Dame team, Koch serve out the 8-1 win.
Kurey/Woodard (Georgia Tech) def. Flickinger(Auburn)/Zabor (Alabama): 8-4
Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard of Georgia Tech looked as if they might also cruise to victory in the women’s doubles final. The Yellow Jackets pair jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Auburn's Emily Flickinger and Alabama's Emily Zabor. Flickinger and Zabor tried to claw their way back into it, winning the next four games. However, the early deficit was too much to overcome as Kurey and Woodard captured the title with an 8-4 victory.
Mariaryeni Gutierrez (unattached) def. Annie Sullivan (Yale): 0-6, 6-4, 10-2
Yale’s Annie Sullivan began the women’s singles final on fire, winning the first 10 games to take the first set, 6-0, and building a 4-0 lead in the second set. Mariaryeni Gutierrez, formerly of Lamar University, was not fazed. She changed her strategy and won six straight games to take the second set. Gutierrez rode that momentum into the final set tiebreaker, storming to a 10-2 win and completing the improbable comeback.
Drew Lied (Michigan State) def. Chris Diaz (Ohio State): 7-5, 6-3
The men’s singles final was a grind on both sides of the net for both Ohio State’s Chis Diaz and Michigan State’s Drew Lied. Lied jumped to an early 4-1 lead in the first set, before Diaz rattled off four straight games to grab a 5-4 edge. Lied held, then garnered multiple break-point opportunities, but they were thwarted by Diaz. Long points ruled the remainder of the set, with Lied prevailing, 7-5. Lied maintained his upper hand and went on to win the second set, 6-3.
The duo of Koch and Cox, along with Lied, receive automatic bids into the main draw of the 2013 ITA Men’s All-American Championships held in Tulsa, OK, which begin on Sept. 28. Kurey and Woodard are automatically in the main draw of the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships held in Pacific Palisades, CA, which also begin on Sept. 28.
