Thiel to Add Men's, Women's Tennis for 2010-11 Season
GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College will add four new athletics programs to its offerings for the 2010-11 school term including the revival of its men’s and women’s varsity tennis programs after several seasons of inactivity.
Both programs will compete and practice at the College’s on-campus tennis complex, which is slated for resurfacing in the near future. The teams will compete at the NCAA Division III level in the Presidents’ Athletics Conference (PAC).
“It’s a great day to be a part of Thiel College,” said College President Troy VanAken. “The enhancement and expansion of our athletics and extracurricular programs will position Thiel to attract and retain engaged students and student-athletes with the strong academic profile we strive for as an institution.”
Director of Athletics Jack Leipheimer will launch a national search for its men’s and women’s tennis coach immediately.
The ITA and USTA have joined forces to preserve and promote varsity college tennis at all levels and to encourage institutions to sponsor varsity college tennis. This effort has led to numerous varsity men's and women's tennis programs that have been established in the past five to six years among all of the divisional levels.
The main vehicle to achieve this critical mission has been the USTA/ITA Advocacy Network, which is comprised of more than 2,500 individuals throughout the country, all of whom are devoted to varsity college tennis. The ITA website (www.itatennis.com) contains valuable information regarding building tennis programs, advocacy and community outreach.
