Cal Women’s Tennis Plays for Charity

BERKELEY, CA – Members of the California women’s tennis team will participate in the 2010 Esurance Tennis Classic (Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 2-3) and the 19th Annual Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Tennis Classic (Saturday, Oct. 2) this weekend.

The Golden Bears’ top-ranked junior Jana Juricova and sophomore Annie Goransson will each take part in the Alta Bates Classic at the Berkeley Tennis Club (One Tunnel Road, Berkeley, Calif.) with play set to begin at 9 a.m. PT and lasting through 4 p.m. An exhibition featuring special guest hall of famer Martina Navratilova and doubles great Gigi Fernandez will be held on court one at 2 p.m.

The Celebrity Classic has been held at the Berkeley Tennis Club for the past 15 years and has featured Grand Slam winners Tracy Austin, Virginia Wade, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Mats Wilander, Luke Jensen, the Bryan Brothers, Monica Seles, Corina Morariu, Lindsay Davenport and many local media and sports celebrities.

The all-day tournament will include three levels of play in a round robin doubles format. Sponsored players will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to play doubles tennis with and against well-known local tennis pros as well as sports and media celebrities. No. 16-ranked senior Mari Andersson and sophomore Tayler Davis will head to Mill Valley, Calif. to take part in the sixth-annual Esurance Tennis Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3, at the Harbor Point Tennis Club. Produced by Rosie Casals and The Harbor Point Charitable Foundation, proceeds benefit three charities; To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation, Us TOO Prostate Cancer Education & Support Network, and Youth Tennis Advantage.

Headlining the field of exhibition players is, Billie Jean King (appearing Saturday only). King is the winner of 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles tennis titles. She is recognized in spearheading the women's movement in tennis and creating inroads for women in and out of sports. In 2009, she received the Medal of Freedom from President Barrack Obama, in recognition of her career and life long accomplishments. Joining King are Anna Kournikova, Pat Cash, Lindsay Davenport, Tracy Austin, Murphy Jensen, Rick Leach, Justin Gimelstob and Gigi Fernandez.

Fans will experience great tennis, fine food and family fun at the Tennis Village. Following the weekend action, Andersson and Juricova will head to Los Angeles for the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. Both players will participate in the singles main draw and will team up to defend their No. 1 ranking in the doubles main draw.
