Novo Sets A-Sun Record By Winning Third Player Of The Week Honors Of Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Now that USC Upstate women’s tennis player Anna Novo has already set school records in pretty much any category that the school tracks, the senior obviously had no choice but to go after conference records. On Tuesday, the Atlantic Sun Conference office in Macon, Ga., announced that she is the first player in conference history to earn three A-Sun Player of the Week nods in a season and tying the conference mark for most player of the week honors in a career as she earned the award for posting critical wins at No. 1 singles in 4-3 wins over Jacksonville and North Florida.

The award is the senior’s eighth career player of the week award, as she won three in the Division II Peach Belt Conference in 2007 and she won two A-Sun honors in 2008 before winning the A-Sun award on Feb. 4 and March 11 this season. Novo, in just two years, tied Jacksonville’s Emese Sulyos (2004-07), the A-Sun Player of the Year in 2004 and 2007, for the A-Sun record of five player of the week awards

With sophomore partner Emilia Milovanovic, Novo clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Jacksonville's Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova and then clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Soldatova at No. 1 singles, giving Upstate a 4-0 lead before the Dolphins closed the gap with three wins to end the match. On Monday, she paced the Spartans with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Aline Berkenbrock of North Florida to help the Spartans take a 2-1 lead, their first of the match against the 6-2 Lady Ospreys.

Already the most decorated player in school history, Novo is a two-time Division II All-American and the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year. She holds school records of 88 singles wins, 70 doubles wins and 157 combined wins. She also is the only player in school history to post 20 singles wins in three straight seasons and, along with partner, Milovanovic, is one of two players in school history to post back-to-back 20-doubles win seasons. This season, Novo is 24-4 in singles play, second in school history only to her 29 wins as a junior, and 20-6 in doubles play, which is tied for fifth in school history.

The Spartans (12-2 overall, 7-0 A-Sun) get back in action on Friday at 1 p.m. when they head to FGCU for an A-Sun match.
