Northwestern, Virginia remain No. 1 in Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings
Top spots: The Virginia men and the Northwestern women hold on to the top spot in this week’s Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Northwestern (17-1) has been ranked No.1 in every ranking period this season and in 22 of the past 23 rankings while Virginia (24-0), the only undefeated team in both the men’s and women’s top 25, claims the top spot for the fifth straight week and for the 22nd time in the past 28 rankings. The Cavaliers were able to pick up a pair of victories over Tobacco Road foes Duke and North Carolina and will look to cap off their second consecutive undefeated regular season against North Carolina State on April 11. Coming off an impressive 4-3 win over then No. 3 Notre Dame and a 7-0 sweep over Purdue, the top-ranked Wildcats improved to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten, stretching its conference winning streak to 70 matches. NU is currently the only team ranked in the women’s top 25 with only one loss and is looking to stay that way after its three-match road trip this week that covers William & Mary, Minnesota and Iowa.
Rounding Out the Top 10: On the women's side, Northwestern is followed by (in order): Georgia, Baylor, Notre Dame, Duke, Miami (FL), Georgia Tech, California, USC, and Stanford. For the men, following Virginia is: Mississippi, Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia, USC, Baylor, Stanford, UCLA and Florida.
Conference Count: Men's Top 25: SEC – 7; ACC and Pac-10 – 5; Big 12 – 3; Big Ten – 2; Big East, WAC and WCC - 1. Five different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the SEC claiming four of the top 10 spots and the Pac-10 with three. Women’s Top 25: SEC – 8; ACC – 6; Pac-10 – 5; Big Ten – 2; Big 12, Big East, Conference USA and WAC – 1. Six different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the ACC and Pac-10 each claiming four of the top 12 spots.
Twice as Nice: Twelve schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.

Jumpers and Newcomers: While there was once again only one new team to join the women’s top 25 this week with South Carolina rising six spots from No. 30, LSU made the largest jump, climbing eight notches to No. 16. On the men’s side, three different teams all moved up at least three spots to claim their spot among the men’s top 25. Virginia Tech, Miami (FL) and Wake Forest each made return appearances, coming in at No. 22, 23 and 25, respectively. Miami (FL) made the biggest leap, boosting itself eight places from No. 31 in last week’s rankings.
Race is On: The Virginia men and Texas A&M women continue to set the pace in the second annual ITA Attendance Race. The standings reflect matches through the month of March. The Virginia men are tops in total attendance with 4,482 fans through 14 matches this season. The Cavs continue to lead Tulsa and Illinois but it is Mississippi who drew in an astounding 2,332 in the month of March to put the Rebels near the top of the standings. Ole Miss has taken control of the average attendance with an average of 532, almost 200 more than Texas A&M (349), which led in last month’s standings. Mississippi has also posted the top three single match totals on the season, surpassing the 800 mark twice in the month of March. Texas A&M continues to lead the way in all of the women's categories with 3,389 total fans, including the four of the top five match totals, all of which surpassed the 500 mark, good for a 424 per match average, which also leads the nation by an average attendance of nearly 250. Highlighting the ITA Attendance Race thus far are the more than 25,000 fans taking in home matches for the top five men's and women’s race leaders. Of the top five men’s and women’s leaders, nine out of 10 are currently ranked in the top 25 of the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.
Mark your calendars: The 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Tennis Championships will take place at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, May 14-25. The round of 16 through the finals of the team tournaments is May 14-19 and the singles and doubles championships take place May 20-25. First and second round NCAA matches will take place at campus sites (to be determined) May 8-9. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s championships and can be purchased at 888/99-AGGIE or www.AggieAthletics.com. This year’s NCAA selection show will take place April 28 on ESPNews.

These rankings reflect results through Sunday, April 5.
