Northwestern, Virginia hold on to No. 1 in Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings
Mijacika, Nedovyesov top spots in singles; Fresno State, Wake Forest No. 1 in doubles

Top spots: The Virginia men and the Northwestern women hold on to the top spot in this week’s Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Northwestern (15-1) has been ranked No.1 in every ranking period this season and in 21 of the past 22 rankings while Virginia (22-0), the only undefeated team in both the men’s and women’s top 25, claims the top spot for the fourth straight week and for the 21st time in the past 27 rankings. The Cavaliers were able to grind out a pair of 4-3 victories over Sunshine State foes Florida State and Miami (FL). UVA has a two-week break to rest up for its last match of the regular season, as they will try to cap off their second consecutive undefeated regular season against North Carolina State on April 11. The Wildcats play host to Notre Dame in a huge matchup against the third-ranked Irish this weekend after picking up wins over then No. 15 Fresno State and No. 16 Michigan. NU is currently the only team ranked in the women’s top 25 with only one loss.

Rounding Out the Top 10: On the women's side, Northwestern is followed by (in order): Georgia, Notre Dame, Baylor, Miami (FL), Georgia Tech, USC, California, Duke and Stanford. For the men, following Virginia is: Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, USC, Baylor, Stanford, UCLA and Florida.

Conference Count: Men's Top 25: SEC – 7; Pac-10 – 5; ACC, Big Ten and Big 12 – 3; Big East – 2; WAC and WCC - 1. Five different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the SEC claiming four of the top 10 spots while the Pac-10 claimed three. Women's Top 25: SEC – 8; ACC – 6; Pac-10 – 5; Big Ten – 2; Big 12, Big East, Conference USA and WAC – 1. Six different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the ACC and Pac-10 each claiming four of the top 12 spots.

Twice as Nice: Twelve schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.

Jumpers and Newcomers: While there was once again only one new team to join the women’s top 25 this week with Vanderbilt rising seven spots from No. 26, both Arkansas and Florida State were able to make the largest jumps, each climbing eight notches to No. 15 and No. 17, respectively. On the men’s side, three different teams all moved up five places in the rankings to claim their spot among the men’s top 25. Duke joined the top 25 for the first time this season at No. 25, while Washington and Notre Dame each made return appearances, coming in at No. 21 and No. 22, respectively.

Singling Out No. 1: After beginning the year ranked No. 1 in the pre-season, Oklahoma State’s Oleksandr Nedovyesov is back on top in the men’s singles rankings while Clemson’s Ani Mijacika remains No. 1 in women’s singles for the third consecutive time. Cory Parr and Steven Forman of Wake Forest continue to lead the way in men’s doubles as does Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State in the women’s rankings. Both duos have remained No. 1 since capturing the top spot on February 19.

Mark your calendars: The 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Tennis Championships will take place at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, May 14-25. The round of 16 through the finals of the team tournaments is May 14-19 and the singles and doubles championships take place May 20-25. First and second round NCAA matches will take place at campus sites (to be determined) May 8-9. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s championships and can be purchased at 888/99-AGGIE or www.AggieAthletics.com. This year’s NCAA selection show will take place April 28 on ESPNews.

Next Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings: The next weekly team rankings will be released on Tuesday, April 7 while the next singles and doubles rankings will be released on Tuesday, April 14. These rankings reflect results through Sunday, March 29. It is important and factually accurate to include “Campbell” in the title so please remember when referring to the ITA Rankings to cite as Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.
