Lady Pirates Capture Blue Gray Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team captured the Blue Gray Small College Classic title on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over host and top-ranked (NAIA) Auburn Montgomery.
The Lady Pirates (17-1) defeated the Lady Senators (10-3) for the second time this season, but this time winning on Auburn Montgomery's home court.
AASU won two of three doubles matches as top-ranked Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau notched an 8-3 win over Delia Sescioreanu and Julie Verdy at No. 1 doubles and seventh-ranked Gabriella Kovacs and Sona Novakova picked up an 8-3 win over Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom at No. 2 doubles. The Lady Senators won a doubles point at No. 3 with Tereza Veverkova and Dominika Zuzulova's 8-4 win over Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel.
The Lady Pirates then won three singles matches to claim the title. 16th-ranked Muller-Wehlau defeated Verdy, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while No. 30-ranked Beckmann picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win over Chen at No. 3 singles. 19th-ranked Kovacs collected a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zuzulova at No. 4 singles and the Pirates were up in two of the other singles matches, while a third had split sets when the match was clinched.
AASU returns to action on Saturday, April 11, with a 2:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match at Lander.
