MOBILE, Ala--Fresno Pacific University (Calif.) defeated Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) 5-3 in the 2009 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Finals Saturday to pick up the program's first national title and end the Senators' bid for a fourth straight title.

While many of the men's matches leading up to the finals featured ho-hum 5-0 or 5-1 results with the favorites advancing, Saturday's title bout had fans on the edge of their seats until the very end when the Sunbirds' Maxime Adam rallied to take down AUM's Francisco Redondo 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Redondo dominated the opening set, taking the first five games and rolling to a 6-1 victory. But, after dropping the first game of the second set, Adam responded by reeling off six straight games to even things up. Then, with AUM up 3-2 in the third set, Adam again rebounded with four straight games to win the match.

Things started off in AUM's favor, with the Senators taking a quick 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles and then holding on for an 8-4 win at No. 2 after building a 5-0 advantage. Fresno Pacific's team of Vicente Joli and Alex Gonzales picked up a crucial win at No. 1 doubles by pulling away from a tight early match and then holding on for the 8-5 victory.

Singles play started out in AUM's favor as well, with Nikola Miskovic picking up an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fresno's Jose Hilla at No. 6 singles to put the Senators ahead 3-1 in the overall match.

Gonzales followed by picking up a win for Fresno with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3 singles over Sadio Doumbia, and then the tide turned in favor of the Sunbirds, with No. 1 and No. 4 singles finishing just minutes apart.

Fabio Silva took down Victor Sanaka-Papi 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, rallying from 5-4 deficits in each set, and minutes later, teammate Marco Foelz took down Monte Tucker 6-2, 6-4 to put Fresno one point away from victory. Adam did the rest with his victory over Redondo.
