Emory, Williams remain No. 1 in Division III Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings
Top spots: Emory and Williams held on to the top spot in the Division III Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings. The Ephs have not yet begun play in 2009 but earned the preseason top ranking by recording victories over No. 6 Amherst, No. 10 Wellesley and No. 23 Vassar in the fall. The Eagles of Emory are 9-1 this spring including four wins over opponents ranked in the top 10, two of which were recorded en route to Emory’s third ITA Division III National Men’s Team Indoor title.
Rounding out the Top 10: Following Emory in this week’s men’s top 10 are (in order): Washington University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Middlebury, Williams, Amherst, Gustavus Adolphus, UC Santa Cruz, Kenyon and Redlands. On the women's side, Williams is followed by (in order): Washington and Lee, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, Denison, Amherst, Emory, Pomona-Pitzer, Mary Washington and Wellesley.
Conference Count: Men's Top 25: NESCAC – 6; UAA – 4; SCAC – 3; NCAC and SCIAC – 2; ASC, CAC, Centennial, Independent, Liberty, MIAC, NWC and ODAC – 1. Seven different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the NESCAC claiming three of the top six spots. Women's Top 25: NESCAC – 6; UAA and SCAC – 4; Liberty – 2; CAC, Centennial, IIAC, MIAC, NCAC, NEWMAC, ODAC, SCIAC and WIAC – 1. Six different conferences placed at least one team in the top 10, with the UAA claiming three of the top seven spots.
March Madness: The NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are each down to the Final Four teams. After becoming the only school to produce the NCAA tennis and basketball champion in the same year last year, Washington University (St. Louis) looks to repeat the feat again in 2009. On the women’s side, of the four schools left, three also boast a Top 25 tennis program as Amherst and the College of New Jersey join Washington University in trying to become the first school to be crowned NCAA Champions in both tennis and basketball in the same year.
Twice as Nice: Seventeen Division III schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.

Mark Your Calendar: This year's NCAA Division III Championship begins May 8-10 for both men and women with first, second and third round play at campus sites. The final eight men’s teams face off May 19-24 at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California. The women’s final eight teams also compete May 19-24 at Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Next Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings: The next national team rankings will be released on Tuesday, March 31. It is important and factually accurate to include “Campbell” in the title so please remember when referring to the ITA Rankings to cite as Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.
