Emory, Williams claim top spots in Division III Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings

Top spots: Williams College held on to the top spot in the women’s team rankings while Emory moved up one spot, swapping places with former No. 1 Washington University on the men’s side. The Ephs have not yet begun play in 2009 but earned the preseason top ranking by recording victories over No. 6 Amherst, No. 10 Wellesley and No. 23 Vassar in the fall. The Eagles of Emory are 5-0 this spring including wins over No. 2 Washington University and No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the ITA Division III National Men’s Team Indoor Championship.

Rounding out the Top 10: Following Emory in this week’s men’s top 10 are (in order): Washington University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Middlebury, Williams, Amherst, Kenyon, Gustavus Adolphus, UC Santa Cruz and Trinity (Texas). On the women's side, Williams is followed by (in order): Washington and Lee, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, Denison, Amherst, Emory, Mary Washington, Pomona-Pitzer and Wellesley.

Carnegie Mellon, Emory win ITA Division III National Team Indoors: Carnegie Mellon, the No. 5 seed in the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championship garnered its third consecutive upset in as many days last weekend to capture the event’s first title with a 6-3 win over No. 2 Emory, on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. This newest addition to the ITA national tournament calendar joined its men's counterpart, the ITA National Division III Men's Team Indoor Championships, which was also hosted by Gustavus Adolphus at the Swanson Tennis Center, February 20-22. In a finals matchup that pitted the top two seeds against one another, No. 2 Emory University upset top-ranked Washington University, 6-3, to capture the team’s third ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship title.

Twice as Nice: Sixteen Division III schools have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked inside this week’s top 25.
