2009 Tennis Leadership Camp: USTA Collegiate Leadership Award & Counselor Position

This summer the USTA’s National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) is teaming with the ITA to select one outstanding student-athlete to serve as one of the ten counselors at its 2009 Tennis Leadership Camp (TLC).  The USTA/NJTL is looking for a counselor who is a leader on their campus and in their community.  This opportunity will allow one current junior (rising senior at time of camp) or senior varsity tennis player (recent graduate at time of camp) to serve as a role-model for the campers, aged 12-14, showing the benefits of hard work, not only on the court, but also in the classroom and in their community.  Counselor responsibilities will include on-court coaching as well as off-court supervision.  The USTA/NJTL will pay for all travel expenses, meals, lodging, activities, and other camp related expenses.  Counselors will also receive a $350 stipend.

The USTA/NJTL is a network of community tennis organizations that seek to provide tennis and education for underserved youth. Our goal is to give kids (regardless of income, race, gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis and life skills so they can derive a lifetime of enjoyment from the sport. We are a network of 550 organizations around the country, serving 220,000 youth participants. Our organizations vary in size and scope, but the underlying goal is the same: instill in youngsters the value of leadership and academic excellence.

The Tennis Leadership Camp is an all expenses paid, week long tennis camp for 40 kids, aged 12-14, who show promise in tennis and are nominated by their coach. Campers are selected based on need and skill.  The camp, for most of these kids, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  In addition to daily on-court practice, they participate in local cultural activities as well educational/career training sessions to help prepare them for their future.

This year, the camp will be held in Denver, CO at the University of Denver and the Gates Tennis Center.  Counselors will arrive on July 20 and return on July 27 and must participate in at least two conference calls prior to the Camp.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently be a junior or senior on their institution’s varsity team.
  • Have significant experience volunteering or doing community outreach.
  • Have experience in and enthusiasm for teaching and/or coaching kids.
  • Have experience working with kids from socio-economically diverse backgrounds (urban or “at-risk” groups).
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.7 or above.
  • Pass a background check.

Preference will be give to applicants who:

  • Have their USPTR/USPTA certification.
  • Have a diverse/multi-cultural background.
  • Are fluent in Spanish.
  • Are Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship National or Regional Award winners.
  • Are former NJTL participants.
