UVA's Singh Completes Title Sweep at ITA National Summer Championships
UVA's Singh Completes Title Sweep at ITA National Summer Championships presented by the USTA

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Aug. 15, 2008) - Virginia sophomore Sanam Singh captured the men's singles title Friday to conclude this year's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships presented by the USTA at Indiana University.

UVA's fourth-seeded Singh topped Michigan's third-seeded Jason Jung in today's men's final 6-2, 6-1 to become the fifth men's player to sweep the ITA summer singles and doubles titles. In doubles, he teamed with Houston Barrick to beat Miami's David Rosenfeld and Daniel Vallverdu 9-7 in Thursday's final. Singh, who did not lose a set in six matches this week, is the third UVA player to win the ITA summer title, joining Huntley Montgomery (1999) and Brian Vahaly (2000). Vahaly also swept the titles in '00.

William & Mary junior Ragini Acharya beat Denver's Mallory Voelker 6-4, 6-2 in Thursday's women's final to become the second woman to repeat as singles champion at this event since its inception in 1994. Miami's Michaela Kissell and Laura Vallverdu beat Michigan's Muresan and Chisako Sugiyama to win the women's doubles title on Wednesday.

The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earned wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2008-09 collegiate tennis season - the D'Novo Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October.

The ITA National Summer Championships presented by the USTA are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 26 regional sites throughout the country in July. More than 25,000 men and women have competed in circuit events since it began in 1993.
