2017 Division I Men's #ITAIndoors: Day Two Results and Recap

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The semifinals of the 2017 ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship are set following Saturday’s quarterfinal round at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, VA.

(1) Virginia, (2) Wake Forest, (3) Ohio State, and (5) North Carolina are the final four teams competing in main draw action.

(3) Ohio State def. (11) Oklahoma State, 4-0
No. 3 seed Ohio State opened the day with a 4-0 win over the No. 11 seed Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Buckeyes picked up the doubles point after claiming wins in the No. 2 (No. 25 Martin Joyce/Hugo Di Feo def. No. 50 Jurence Mendoza/Lucas Gerch, 6-2) and No. 3 (Matt Mendez/Hunter Tubert def. Lukas Finzelberg/Artur Dubinski, 7-5) doubles positions.

Top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard, No. 8 Hugo Di Feo, and No. 44 Herkko Pollanen sealed the Buckeye’s win with straight-set singles victories over their opponents.

Ohio State (3) Wake Forest

(2) Wake Forest def. (10) Texas, 4-3
The day was highlighted by the 4-3 quarterfinal showdown between No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 10 Texas.

Wake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Longhorns stormed back to tie the match at 3-3. All eyes turned to court six where Wake Forest redshirt freshman Alan Gadjiev and Texas sophomore Rodrido Banzer were just beginning their third set. In the end, Gadjiev prevailed winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. 

(5) North Carolina def. (4) California, 4-2
The Tar Heels, who are the defending champions, are headed back to the semifinals after topping No. 5 seed California Bears. UNC dropped the doubles point to start the match, but came back firing in singles play taking first sets in four of the six positions. The momentum shifted after the Golden Bears took four of the six second sets. However, in the end, the Robert Kelly would clinch the match for the Tar Heels to send North Carolina to the semifinals. 

(1) Virginia def. (8) UCLA, 4-0
The top-ranked Cavaliers cruised into the semifinals with a 4-0 win over UCLA. After winning the doubles point with victories at lines two and three, the Cavs carried their momentum into singles. JC Aragone, Henrik Wiersholm, and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski won their respective matches to send Virginia to the semifinals in a rematch of last years' championship match.
